Coach Application Process **Must have all steps complete before submitting your application** S1 Step 1 You will need your NCCP# and your training transcript to complete this application. Both can be retrieved on the Coaching Association of Canada site here . Outstanding requirements must be provided to Coach@sbrsoftball.com no later than March 25, 2026. Calgary Minor Softball starts issuing suspensions on April 1. Coaches will be contacted once evaluations are complete and teams are being created. S2 Step 2 Complete Softball Canada's Foundations of Coaching S oftball (one time) The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Must be completed by April 1. SBR will reimburse this cost for coaches. Submit receipts to treasurer@sbrsoftball.com You'll need to create an NCCP# to start the course as well as include it in your coach application. Forgot your NCCP#? Retrieve it here . S3 Step 3 Complete the Safe Sport Course The course takes approximately 90 mins to complete. Must be completed by April 1. Once signed into The Locker, search for the course under 'E-Learning' The completed course will be recorded in your Locker under your 'Profile' S4 Step 4 NEW! Complete the Keeping Girls in Sports course (ensure you connect to your NCCP locker) The cost of the resource is $17 and it takes about 90 minutes to complete. Coaches who are required to maintain their certification of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) will earn two Professional Development points towards their Maintenance of Certification through the Locker. S5 Step 5 - Police Check Complete the Calgary Minor Softball Police Check procedure (every 3 years). Expiring police checks are updated annually. Check here to see if you're on the list. To request your police check voucher, email policechecks@calgaryminorsoftball.com . *Out of town coaches - for those living outside the Calgary city limits, please email: coach@sbrsoftball.com to request a letter to begin the process. Please indicate what position you hold on the team, Head Coach, Assistant Coach or Manager. You must share your results with Calgary Minor Softball via the online system. If you receive it in the mail, scan and send it to policechecks@calgaryminorsoftball.com Police Check Coach Training SBR aims to support coaches through training and mentorship so that you have the tools you need to succeed as a coach. On field training: APRIL 8, 2026 - OKOTOKS FIELDHOUSE 6:15 - 8:45pm Expectations & Guidelines As a coach I will: Remember that all the players are playing for their enjoyment, not for mine. Place the emotional and physical well being of my players ahead of a personal desire or external pressure to win. Remember that athletes play to have fun and must be encouraged to have confidence in themselves. Teach athletes to play fairly and to respect the rules, officials, opponents, other coaches, and volunteers. Do my best to provide a safe playing environment for the athlete. Ensure that all athletes get equitable instruction, support and playing time. Remember that athletes need a coach they can respect. I will be generous with praise and set a good example. Work in cooperation with officials. Not ridicule or yell at my athletes, coaches or officials for making mistakes. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my coaching skills. Role model the appropriate behaviours. Yelling at athletes, coach and umpires is prohibited. Give equal access to infield/outfield, not in the same position all the time, batting order will also be rotated. Coach Development Pre-Season Coach Meetings Attend SBR Coach Orientation and On-Field Training: April 8, 2026 - Okotoks Fieldhouse 6:15 - 8:45pm. Check Key Dates for more information. On-Field Training is facilitated by SBR Competition-trained coaches to provide support and learning to all coaches, including throwing, fielding, hitting, catching and pitching. Note: Timbits Coaches will have a separate Coach Orientation meeting prior to season kick off. PROVINCIALS AP Provincials Application Process Teams planning to attend any Softball Alberta Provincial Category must first receive approval from SBR's Executive. Provincial registration fees will not be covered by SBR without this approval. Softball Alberta Provincial registration deadline is June 1st. Requests must be sent to the SBR Coordinator no later than May 25th for approval. It’s no secret that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a sustainable number of umpires and referees for kids’ sports. To help address this, SBR Rockies will be piloting a Bonded Umpire Program—a low-stress opportunity for parents, siblings, grandparents, or family friends to step up and make a difference. BONDED UMPIRE PROGRAM It’s no secret that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a sustainable number of umpires and referees for kids’ sports. To help address this, SBR Rockies will be piloting a Bonded Umpire Program—a low-stress opportunity for parents, siblings, grandparents, or family friends to step up and make a difference. We in the SBR Rockies association are committed to supporting the Calgary Minor Softball Association (CMSA) and the Calgary Minor Umpires Association (CMUA) in their recruitment efforts. Please review the information below and consider whether this role might be a good fit for you. You’ll also have the full backing of the SBR Board, as we are implementing a behavior management system this year for both spectators and players. This will include a newly introduced, signed SBR Rockies Code of Conduct. Advocate Policy + Alberta Softball Umpires Yellow Card Program Umpire Advocate Video JUMP TO JUNIOR UMPIRE TRAINING Disclosure One Umpire Bond will be offered to each team in the following divisions: U9, U11, U13 Div 2/3, U15 Div 2/3, U17 & U19 Div 2/3. Outcome To foster a fun, safe, and fair playing environment for players, umpires, coaches, and families. Objectives Deliver quality, confident, and consistent umpiring at Rockies home games and potentially beyond, depending on umpire participation. Successfully execute the pilot umpire program during the 2025 Spring/Summer season. When proved successful, present the program to CMSA, CMUA, and other softball affiliations with the goal of city-wide adoption. Benefits of Becoming an SBR Rockies Bonded Umpire Help resolve a pressing issue facing CMSA/CMUA by providing a low stress environment to gain experience. Which in turn will hopefully get more people to get certified under CMUA. Once certified, it will provide umpires—whether minors or adults—with a primary or secondary source of income. (This does not refer to games that fall within your bond obligation) Fulfill your SBR Rockies volunteer bond of $250. Support your daughter’s coaches by relieving them of umpiring concerns, giving them more time to mentor your players. Count your umpired games toward an official, carded umpire designation. Set a great example—your kids and peers will remember your contribution to this initiative. Bond Fulfillment Requirements Commit to umpiring the majority of your player’s SBR Rockies home games (if a CMUA umpire is not assigned). If you are unavailable for a game, it is your responsibility—not the coaches’ or manager’s—to find a replacement (either another parent or a bonded umpire). If a sibling or family friend is fulfilling the role, they must be in the age group above the player’s division (e.g., must be 16+ to umpire a U15 game). Attend the mandatory 2–2.5 hour in-person training session provided by SBR and hosted by Jim Portman, President of the Calgary Minor Umpires Association. This session will build your confidence and cover key rules and on-field positioning. You’ll also receive CMSA and Softball Canada rulebooks. Reporting A member of the coaching staff or team manager will track which games are umpired by whom. This record will determine bond fulfillment at the end of the season.
